Did reading the title of this article immediately make you cringe and activate your fight or flight system? Well, guess what you’re not alone. Stress has become so prevalent in our society that simply saying the word creates overwhelm and anxiety. It’s terrible.
As an applied yoga and meditation teacher I’d like to think the mindfulness movement is putting a dent in this rising epidemic, but “dent” may be a stretch, at the very least we’re scratching the surface. I will say that I’m excited to see more and more events, seminars, and conversations happening around stress, mental health, and mindfulness which help breakdown associated stigma and help people access the help and support they need to take back control of their life.
Hack Your Stress Event
A couple weeks ago I received an email from Annette at Shalon asking if I would be interested in being one of the expert facilitators for their next event at General Assembly. First off, Shalon?! I’m intrigued. We jumped on a call a few days later so she could tell me about her kick ass company and the upcoming event.
In summary Shalon brings together people, food, and conversation – the things we all love and rarely have time to consume together. Each shalon event is focused on a different topic, but the cool part is experts are not preaching TO you, they are simply in conversation WITH you.
The Shalon came from a love of uniting people in order to empower us all. When people come together at the table to share ideas and to focus on understanding, we are able to pool our collective passions and strengths to make change.
I was already loving the concept and when Annette went on to tell me about the upcoming event she was inviting me to be an expert at titled Hack Your Stress: A conversation about stress and mindfulness.… I nearly fell off my seat. The two areas of personal development, leadership, and human psychology that I am obsessed with. Say no more, I’m there.
It was an honor to sit as an expert alongside my mindfulness colleagues Libby, James, and Stefana and engage in conversation with 40 inspiring individuals while eating yummy food from Norcina, drinking delicious Hint water all sponsored by Bumble Bizz (yup bumble is more than a dating app) and not to mention getting photographed by the amazing Chloe Jackman.
I always say the best part of being a teacher is learning from my students. There are so many different ways to shift your relationship with Stress. The most important thing is to start doing one small thing today.
Here are 5 Simple Stress Hacks:
- No matter how crazy and stressed out you feel remember – “This too shall pass”
- Stress happens. To everyone. Sometimes it helps to remember – You are not alone.
- Step outside, in nature and take a breath. Reconnecting with your senses gets you out of your head (where Stress lives) and back into your body.
- Shake it off. Literally! Shake your body and release that pent up energy
- Stress occurs in the past and future. Rehashing the past is depression, rehearsing the future is anxiety. Stop the spin cycle and step back into the present moment – Refer to hacks 1-4.
