I came across the Zico coconut water product a few weeks ago at Whole Foods. Something about it appealed to me so I gave it a shot. Plus, it brought back memories of being in India and having a fresh coconut chopped open and handed to me to sip. In many East Asian countries coconuts are used as natural healers, inside and out. The fresh water is meant to hydrate, the milk is meant to provide essential fats, and the oils do wonder for beauty! So it’s no surprise that industries have finally caught on to this, it was just a matter of time. A number of companies have come out with their own version of coconut water in various flavors. I can only vouch for Zico. It tastes great and natural. It is full of electrolytes and has more potassium than a banana which makes it an ideal pre or post workout drink. The best thing about it is there is no added sugar. The company that makes it is based in California and presents itself as health and environmentally conscious, which is an added bonus.
Zico is just another reminder that “Food is drug, eat responsibly”. There is a huge food shift happening around us. People are no longer interested in adding man made chemicals to their body and are opting for natural alternatives. The hope is that in a few years the burden of eating naturally will not be so high and eventually be accessible to everyone.
So next time you are looking for a sports drink, pass on the Gatorade and pick up something a little more closer to nature. The product is being sold at local grocery stores. Let me know your thoughts!

When I looked at the nutrition facts, I was a little bit concerned about the amount of sugar that it contains in Zico coconut water. Would it be safe to drink it for post workout without spiking my insulin levels?
